Scope

Revit Automation Implementation for Elevator Modeling and Documentation

Problem Statement

  • In large-scale Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) projects, coordinating and modeling vertical transportation systems is a complex and time-consuming task.
  • BIM managers and designers must interpret elevator specifications, place complex elevator families across multiple levels, generate dedicated shaft and machine room views, and annotate structural openings and clearances. These tasks are typically performed manually across multiple views and sheets.
  • In projects involving many elevators and multiple teams, maintaining consistency in elevator modeling and documentation becomes difficult. Revisions to the architectural or structural models often require repeated adjustments, and without a standardized workflow, the process becomes highly prone to human error.
  • The major challenge was therefore to develop a solution that could standardize elevator modeling workflows, automate documentation tasks, and ensure consistent results across the entire project team.

Challenges and Objectives

  • Based on this common challenge in AEC projects, the objective of the project was to develop a solution that could automate the major stages of elevator BIM coordination within Revit.
  • The tool needed to simplify the process of extracting elevator shaft data, placing elevator models accurately within shafts, generating required views, and producing consistent documentation.
  • The challenge was to build a workflow that connects all these steps into a single automated process while ensuring accuracy, adherence to project standards, and efficiency across large BIM models.

Our Solution

  • To address these challenges, a custom Revit plugin was developed using C# and the Revit API.
  • The solution introduces a dedicated Ribbon tab within Revit that allows users to automate multiple elevator coordination tasks through a simple interface. The plugin consolidates several complex modeling and documentation steps into a streamlined workflow.

Data Extraction

  • The plugin allows users to extract elevator shaft data directly from the Revit model and export it to Excel with a single click.
  • The extracted information includes shaft dimensions, level references, and structural details required for coordination with lift manufacturers and tender documentation.
  • By automating this step, the tool eliminates manual data collection and ensures that all relevant shaft information is captured accurately from the BIM model.

Model Placement

  • The plugin automates the placement of elevator families within the shaft geometry.
  • Using user-defined reference points, the tool places the elevator model accurately within the shaft and aligns it with the correct levels in the project. This ensures consistent placement across multiple floors and eliminates manual positioning errors.

View Creation

  • Elevator documentation requires several dedicated views such as shaft plans, machine room plans, pit plans, and shaft sections.
  • The plugin automatically generates these views for each elevator shaft. It applies predefined view templates, crops the views to the exact shaft extents, and organizes them within the Revit Project Browser according to project standards.
  • This automation ensures consistency across all elevator core views within the model.

Dimension Placement

  • Dimensioning elevator components across multiple views is one of the most time-consuming steps in elevator documentation.
  • The plugin automates the dimensioning process by generating standardized dimensions across all relevant elevator views. This includes dimensions related to shaft geometry, machine room layouts, pit configurations, door locations, counterweight clearances, structural openings, and other elevator components required for documentation.
  • The tool analyzes the geometry of the shaft and associated elements and places the necessary dimensions automatically across plans, sections, and elevation views. This ensures that the drawings follow project drafting standards while eliminating repetitive manual work.

Conclusion

  • The development of this custom elevator automation plugin significantly improves the efficiency of elevator modeling and documentation workflows within Revit.
  • By combining data extraction, model placement, view generation, and automated dimensioning into a single solution, the plugin transforms a complex manual process into a streamlined automated workflow.
  • The tool helps ensure consistent elevator modeling across large projects, improves documentation accuracy, and reduces the time required for elevator coordination tasks.
