Why this course

This course provides a practical understanding of what makes a building healthy, comfortable, and sustainable for its occupants. It explains the key principles of healthy buildings and shows how they are applied through the LEED v5 Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) requirements. Participants will learn about topics such as indoor air quality, thermal comfort, lighting, acoustics, safe water, and resilient building design, along with the latest updates in LEED v5. By the end of the course, participants will have the confidence to apply these concepts effectively in their own projects.

About

We spend most of our lives indoors, yet the quality of our indoor environment is often overlooked in building design. This course puts Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) at the centre of healthy building design. Built around ASHRAE’s 2025–26 Presidential Theme, “Healthy Buildings” the course begins with the principles and evidence behind healthy indoor environments. It explores five key areas: indoor air quality, thermal comfort, acoustic comfort, visual comfort, and safe water. It examines how these conditions can affect health, comfort, focus, productivity, and overall occupant well-being.

It walks through the EQ prerequisites and credits and explains how their requirements translate into practical design, compliance, and implementation decisions. Topics include ventilation and filtration, air quality testing and monitoring, smoking and vehicle-idling controls, construction management, resilient spaces, occupant experience, biophilic design, thermal and acoustic comfort, lighting and daylight, accessibility, and inclusion.
